Under the Paving Stones, the Beach
“Chapeltown News usually restricts itself to what’s happening in Chapeltown. But we have never thought that Chapeltown is an island –everything that happens here is affected by what happens in other parts of the country ”
/Chapeltown News, 1970s/
Commissioned artists and artists’ collectives will join other new initiatives in making Chapeltown the place to be this June. Events, interactions, socials, games, and exhibitions will take place across a variety of venues along Chapeltown Road.
Initiated by East Street Arts the project will explore the public realm, social possibilities and leisure. To complete the events we need you, residents, artists, visitors, activists, young and old to come along and participate.
Under the Paving Stones, the Beach is a translation of the Situationist International Slogan used during the protests of May ’68 in Paris. The slogan represents for us a link to darker days in Chapeltown that should be remembered but also to the possibilities that are emerging from the cracks!
